Using The Learning Equation with Windows 2000, XP, and Mac OS X
Q. How do you start TLE in Windows 2000 or XP?
A. After installing TLE on a Windows 2000 or XP system, The Learning
Equation folder on the Start menu is "empty". To deal with this,
add a shortcut to Nav32.exe located in C:\Program files\TLE to the Start
menu or the Desktop. You can make your own shortcut or download one from
Updates and patches.

Q. When attempting to
start The Learning Equation, a message appears:
'Director 5.0
Error: This program requires at least 3 MB of Virtual Memory to run.'
A. If you have 512 MB of RAM or more, you may need to adjust the Virtual
Memory to allow TLE to work. Depending on the available hard disk space,
you can either increase or decrease the Page File size.
In Windows XP:
- From the Start menu > Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance
and select System, or right-click the My Computer icon (if it's on your
desktop) and select Properties.
- In the System Properties, click the Advanced tab.
- Click Settings under Performance, and click the Change button under
Virtual Memory.
- Select a drive that contains the Paging File (if you have more than
one) normally this is C and click Custom size.
- You can either increase Virtual Memory to 4000 Initial and 4096 Maximum
- use this option if you have enough free hard disk space - or decrease
the Initial size to 768 and the Maximum to 1024.
- Click OK in Virtual Memory, then in Performance Options, and then
in System Properties and Restart Windows if prompted.
Start The Learning Equation. If you chose to lower Virtual Memory, and
you still get the message, lower the Initial size for the page file to
256 MB.
In Windows 2000:
- Right-Click the My Computer icon on your desktop and select Properties.
- In the System Properties, click the Advanced tab.
- Click Performance Options, and click the Change button under Virtual
Memory.
- Select a drive that contains the Paging File (if you have more than
one) normally this is C.
If you chose to lower Virtual Memory, and
you still get the message lower the Initial size for the page file to
256 MB.

Q. What issues arise when TLE is configured to run on Windows 2000
Servers?
- When The Learning Equation program, Nav32.exe, is launched, it writes
two temp files, xobglu16.dll and xobglu32.dll, to the Winnt folder.
These files are deleted when the application quits. Average users will
not have permission to add files to Winnt so the program generates an
error message. One workaround is to Shift Right-click on the TLE shortcut
and use the Run As option to run the application as a user or administrator
set up with Permission to add the files to the Winnt folder. This is
transparent to the user and presents no security risk as far as we can
tell.
- This is not unique to Windows 2000 but since it is usually run on
newer systems with higher memory, it occurs more often. TLE may not
work when the page fault (virtual memory) is greater than 400 MB (click
here to find out more).
- We have not done any testing on Windows 2000 Terminal Server. There
are no special instructions or scripts and no plans to update at this
time. However, a number of school boards have configured Windows 2000
Terminal Server to run TLE.

Q. Is TLE compatible with Mac OS X?
TLE will run in the Classic environment of Mac OS X.
