1. What is the Class Results Viewer (CRV)?

The Class Results Viewer (CRV) is a program that comes with each grade level of The Learning Equation and allows teachers to monitor their students' progress. It is used to view and print results that are recorded in the TLE student files. For more information on installing and using this application see: Where can I learn more about installing and using the Teacher's Preview Version and the Class Results Viewer programs that come with The Learning Equation?

2. How do you recommend saving TLE student files in a network environment so they can be viewed with the CRV?

The following are suggestions from The Learning Equation Technical Support. Your school may have its own network configuration that requires a particular setup. Your network administrator can advise you in this case.

(Note: "Access" is used here as a general term for security control. Each network operating system uses its own terminology: Windows NT uses "Permissions", Novell Netware uses "Rights", and AppleShare uses "Privileges" to refer to security access).

OPTION A: Student Folder/Drop Box Method

This option has the added benefit of duplicating the student files. For this option, the student files can be created by the teacher, the network administrator or the students.

  1. Create a personal, protected folder for each student on the network server or workstation. This is often done automatically when setting up a user account on a network. The student will require Read and Write access to this folder.
  2. From The Learning Equation's File menu, create a New student file in the personal folder. Repeat this step for each student.
  3. On the server hard drive, create a folder to use as a drop box. Give Add or Create access to the student Group you assign to this folder. Give the teacher(s) Read or higher access. Repeat this step for each class or grade.
  4. When the teacher wishes to check the students' work, have the students hand in their files by copying them from their personal folders to the drop box folder.
  5. The teacher can then use the Class Results Viewer to check the copies of the student files in the drop box folder. (See: How do I change the location or folder from which the CRV opens TLE student files?).

Alternatively, the student files can be stored on a floppy disk and handed in to the teacher, or copied from the floppy disk to a drop box folder. Copies of the disk should be made on a regular basis

OPTION B: File Level Security Method

If the student files for a class are created in the same working directory or folder, additional security precautions must be taken at the file level or with third party security software. For this option, it is best if the administrator creates the student files.

  1. Create a new folder on a network server disk. If required, create sub-folders for each class or grade.
  2. Use the Administration tools for your network operating system to assign Read access to the folder for the Group to which the students belong, and Read or higher access for the teacher.
  3. From The Learning Equation's File menu, create a new file for each student and save these in the appropriate folder from step 1.
  4. Use the Administration tools for your network to assign Read and Write access to the file for the student who will be working with that file. Assign Read or higher access for the teacher. Repeat this step for each student file.
  5. After the students have completed their work, the teacher can then use the Class Results Viewer to check the student files in the folder. (See: How do I change the location or folder from which the CRV opens TLE student files?).

OPTION C: Third Party Security Software

There are numerous security software packages available. These can be simple or complex to use but should not require any special setup for TLE. This software is usually installed on the classroom computers for general security and will be applied to TLE when it is installed. Your school board's technical staff will usually determine what the best solution is for your school.

BACKING UP TLE Student Files

One of the key factors to ensure protection against data loss is that the student files be duplicated or backed up. This is true for all important computer data, not only TLE files.

  • Some form of backup for the student files is strongly recommended no matter which option you choose for file security management.
  • Backup can be as simple as having the students copy their files from the hard disk to a floppy disk or to a secure folder on a workstation or server.
  • The network will usually have some form of automated backup to tape drives, disk arrays or other media. Recovery from these backup systems involves knowledge of the backup management software used.
  • Therefore additional backup by the student is recommended to permit quick access to a file if the original file becomes corrupt or lost.

3. How do I change the location or folder from which the CRV opens TLE student files?

This procedure is carried out on the teacher's computer. The CRV will then open to the location containing the student files.

For Windows 95, 98, and NT 4.0 systems, follow these steps:

  1. Open Windows Explorer and locate Results Viewer.exe or Class Results.exe in the C:\Program Files\TLE(7, 8, 9 or 10)\CRV folder. (The exe extension may not appear if Windows is configured to "Hide file extensions for known file types")
  2. Create a shortcut to Results Viewer.exe or Class Results.exe and move the shortcut to a convenient location.
  3. Right click on the Results Viewer or Class Results shortcut and select Properties from the drop down menu.
  4. Select the Shortcut tab in the Properties window.
  5. Change the "Start in" path to the new location for the student files for example: "\\server\math\grade9\classH". The default path for the student files is "C:\Program Files\TLE(7, 8, 9 or 10)\Users".

For Macintosh systems, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the Apple menu, select Control Panels, and open General Controls.
  2. Select "Last folder used by the application" in the Documents section and close General Controls.
  3. Launch the Class Viewer, navigate to the folder where the student files are located, select a file and click the "Open" button.

For Windows 3.1x systems, follow these steps:

  1. In Program Manager, create a new Program group. Enter "Class Results Viewers" for the Description, leave Group File blank and click OK.
  2. In the Class Results Viewers group, create a Program item for each grade of TLE that is installed.
  3. Give each Program item the appropriate Description (e.g. CRV 9) and Command Line ( e.g. C:\TLE9\CRV\quizview.exe).
  4. In the Working Directory field, enter the path to where the student files are located, for example: \\server\math\grade9\classH. The default location is C:\TLE(7, 8, 9, or 10)\users).
  5. The Shortcut Key can remain as "none" and the Run Minimized box can be left unchecked. Click the OK button.
  6. To change the student file location: select the CRV icon then select Properties from the File menu in the Program Manager (shortcut: press the Alt and Enter keys simultaneously). Change the Working Directory path to the new location for the student files (e.g. \\server\math9\students).

4. Why is it necessary to implement security management for TLE student files?

Because student files need to be in the same folder for the teacher to see all the students in a class, the student files must either be managed in a common folder or moved there later for viewing with the Class Results Viewer.

The folder or directory containing the student files must be accessible to both the students and teachers. Security must be implemented because students need to write data to their files. If security is only managed at the folder level then students can write, change, or delete any files in the folder.

There are several options available to manage student file security. (See: How do you recommend saving TLE student files in a network environment so they can be viewed with the CRV?)

5. Why do none or only some of the students appear when I use the Class Results Viewer to check my students' progress?

Some of the possible solutions for problems viewing student files are:

  • The student files must be in the same folder in order to appear together in the CRV. The files should be at the same level in the folder, not in sub-folders. Copy student files of the same grade to the same folder and select any one of the files in that folder with the CRV.
  • The student may be using his or her file. You cannot view a student's file with the CRV while the file is in use. A student must quit TLE before you can view the file.
  • The student may not have started working in TLE. A newly created student file will appear in the "Open" window after the "Student Files" button is clicked but the student will not appear in the CRV's table unless some part of a TLE lesson is completed.
  • If you know the student files contain data but the names do not appear, try changing your monitor's colour palette to 256 colours. Use Display Settings in the Windows 9x/NT Control Panel, or Monitors & Sound in the Mac OS, Control Panels to do this.

6. I am opening student files in the CRV but I only see a list of names. How do I see the results?

You must click on a student name (in Student view) or a lesson name (in Lesson view) to see the results in the CRV's table.

7. Why do I get a message "this file is not part of the current grade level" when I try to open a student file in the CRV?

There are three possibilities for this occurring.

  • The file you are trying to view may not be for the same grade as the Results Viewer you are using. Each grade requires its own Results Viewer. You cannot view grade 7 student files with the grade 10 CRV for example.
  • You may have a version of TLE that requires a patch to allow it to create student files that will be seen as the correct grade level. See Updates & Patches and download the Tracking.zip file. Follow the instructions in the text file that accompanies this file.
  • The file may be corrupt. Attach it to an email with an explanation of the problem and send it to TLE@nelson.com.

8. Why does the Extra Practice result reset to zero after three Self Checks are completed?

For each TLE lesson, a pool of questions is divided between Extra Practice and Self Check. For example, if there are a total of 48 questions in the Extra Practice component, three groups of 10 questions will be reserved for Self Check. The remaining 18 are used in Extra Practice.

When a student goes through Extra Practice, his or her file records data about logical page completion (e.g.. 18/18). Then in Self Check, the student will get different sets of questions for each of the first three attempts. After the third Self Check is completed, TLE generates a different order of questions from the pool for the Self Check and Extra Practice.

At this point, the Extra Practice part of the student file is reset (e.g.. From 18/18 to 0/18). This is logical as Extra Practice now may contain 18 completely different questions (unlike Practice&Problems which always has the same 20-25 questions). The number of questions in Extra Practice varies form lesson to lesson.

9. How is the Class Results Viewer (CRV) different from the Teacher Preview Version (TPV) of The Learning Equation?

The Teacher Preview Version (TPV) is a special version of The Learning Equation. It is not meant for use by students. It allows a teacher to go through the lessons without performing every student interaction. Teachers can use the Next button or arrow keys and the numbers in the navigation bar to proceed to a new or previous screen without answering the questions.

Questions in certain parts of TLE such as Self-Check must still be answered however. The standard version of The Learning Equation must be installed on the same computer before installing the Teacher Preview Version.
