The Learning Equation Mathematics Home Edition

Issues and Answers

Q. How do I start TLE in Windows 2000, ME or XP?

A. After installing TLE on a Windows 2000, ME or XP system, The Learning Equation folder on the Start menu is "empty". To deal with this, add a shortcut to Nav32.exe located in C:\Program files\TLE to the Start menu or the Desktop. You can make your own shortcut or download one from Updates and patches.

Q. How can I use my school TLE file with the Home Edition? (for students in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, N.W.T., Yukon or Nunavut.)

.Taking your file home:

  1. At school, copy your TLE student file to a floppy disk or attach it to an e-mail message.
  2. If copying to a floppy disk, rename the copy of your student file on the floppy disk to USER.CST. For e-mail, send the message with your file attached to your home and rename the file USER.CST when you detach it.
  3. Copy the USER.CST file from the floppy disk or from e-mail to the TLEx folder (Windows) or the Main_Eng Grade x folder (Macintosh) on your home computer.
  4. If a message appears saying, "This folder already contains a file named "user.cst", would you like to replace the existing file?" click Yes. (Any work done on the existing file will be lost unless it is first backed up to another location.)

Taking your file back to school:

  1. At home, after you finish working in TLE, copy the USER.CST file from your computer to a floppy disk, or attach it to an e-mail message.
  2. If copying to a floppy disk, rename the copy of the USER.CST file on the floppy disk to the name you use for your school TLE file. For e-mail, send the message with your file attached to your school, and rename the file to the name you use for your school TLE file when you detach it.
  3. At school, copy your student file from the floppy disk or from e-mail to the location that is being used to store student files. If you are not sure how to do this, ask your teacher.
  4. If a message appears saying, "This folder already contains a file named "(student's name)", would you like to replace the existing file?" click Yes. (Any work done on the existing file will be lost unless it is first backed up to another location.)

If you wish to work in the same file both at home and at school, repeat this procedure whenever you transport your file between the two locations.

Q. What do I do if I get an error message when using the Glosary in the grade 7 TLE program?

If you get an error message when you try to use the Glossary in The Learning Equation Mathematics 7 Home Edition, Windows Version:

  1. Insert The Learning Equation Mathematics 7 Disk 2 CD in the CD-ROM drive.
  2. Double-click the My Computer icon on your screen, and then double-click the TLE7Disc2 icon in the My Computer window.
  3. Copy the GLOSSDEF folder from the TLE7Disc2 CD to the TLE7 folder in C:\Program Files\TLE7 on your computer's hard disk (drive C:).
  4. In the TLE7 folder, locate and double-click the TLE.INI file. It will open in Notepad. (If you do not see TLE.INI double-click the TLE file icon that looks like a text file, i.e. lines on a page)
  5. At the end of Lesson Path add a comma and the path to the TLE7 folder (default path C:\Program Files\TLE7) so the line looks like [Lesson Path],D:\,C\:Program Files\TLE7\ Make sure there is no space after the comma and that you add the backslash, \, at the end of the line then select Save and Exit.

Q. What do I do if I get a message that the license for TLE has expired before the one year period?
