1. Why do I get the error: "This lesson cannot be found. Please ensure
you have the correct CD inserted in the drive"when selecting a lesson
from The Learning Equation main menu?
If you are running TLE from the local CD-ROM drive then make sure the
CD containing the lesson you want to use is in the drive.
If you installed the Lessons elsewhere, then the path entered during
the installation on the client computers may not be correct. Check the
TLE.INI (C:\Program Files\TLE\TLE.INI) file to make sure that the slashes
have been placed correctly in the path:
After the drive place a colon and a back slash, place a back slash between
each folder and at the end of the path. Ensure there are no spaces after
the last back slash. Place a comma between multiple paths. For example:
[Lesson Path], D:\, C:\, \\Server\TLE\grade7\lessons\
If only a few of the lesson folders have been installed onto the server
be sure that the lesson selected is one of the installed lessons.

2. How do I change the location or folder where TLE Opens and Saves
student files?
This procedure is carried out on each student workstation. The student
files will then be created, opened, and saved to the new directory. Note:
with certain network installations, you will need to modify the student
profile files to change the default location.
For Windows 95/98/NT4 systems, follow these steps:
- Open Windows Explorer and select The Learning Equation folder in C:Windows\Start
Menu\Programs.
- Right click on The Learning Equation(Grade 7, 8, 9 or 10) shortcut
icon in the folder and select Properties from the drop down menu.
- Select the Shortcut tab in the Properties window.
- Change the "Start in" path to the new location for the student files
for example: "\\server\math\grade9\classH". The default path for the
student files is "C:\Program Files\TLE(7, 8, 9 or 10)\Users".

For Windows 3.1x systems, follow these steps:
- In Program Manager, open The Learning Equation group window. If this
window does not appear then click on the Windows from the Program Manager
menu and select The Learning Equation from the list that appears. If
it is not on the list, select More Windows at the bottom and scroll
through the complete list.
- Single click on The Learning Equation (Grade 7, 8, 9 or 10) icon in
The Learning Equation window.
- From the Program Manager menu select File, then select Properties
(shortcut: press the Alt and Enter keys simultaneously).
- Change the Working Directory path to the new location for the student
files for example \\server\math\grade9\classH. The default path is C:\TLE(7,
8, 9, or 10)\Users.

3. What Teachers' programs come with The Learning Equation and how
do I use them?
For Windows 95/98/NT:
- The Class Results Viewer
(CRV)
- The Teacher Preview
Version (TPV)

4. How can students use the Windows calculator or other programs
while working in TLE?
In Windows 95/98/NT:
Press Ctrl and Esc at the same time to access the Taskbar..
To open the calculator, click the Start button, then select Programs>Accessories>Calculator
(If you have a Windows keyboard, simply press the Windows key to access
the Start menu). If the calculator is running, press Alt
and Tab to switch between the calculator and The Learning Equation.
In Windows 3.1:
Press the Alt and Esc keys to access the Program Manager,
then open the Accessories Window, double click on the Calculator icon.
Macintosh/Windows 3.1/95/NT: If the calculator is running, press the
Alt and Tab keys to switch between the calculator and
The Learning Equation.

5. I am trying to Print a screen from TLE but it only prints a blank
page. How do I get it to print properly?
The TLE Print screen function requires that the display be set to 256
. To change the color setting in Windows 95/98/NT:
- Quit TLE if it is running.
- Open the Display in Control Panel.
- Click the Settings tab.
- Select 256 Colors *
- Click Apply then OK. In some cases you may have to restart your
computer.
- Launch TLE. Print screen will now function properly.
* Some graphics card and printer combinations will allow printing at
True color 24-bit (Win95/98) or 16777216 Colors (WinNT).
For Windows 3.1 you must have a graphics card and driver that allows
256 or 24-bit color. Consult your graphics card documentation on how to
set this up.

6. Why do I get a "Problem opening Navigator.dxr -49" error when
starting TLE and what can I do about it?
This error may occur if TLE quits unexpectedly for any reason. When you
restart TLE, the Navigator.dxr file appears to be in use and the error
is generated. Technical Support and the TLE developers are aware of this
problem and are determining a course of action to deal with it. The only
workaround at present is to restart the computer.
If you get the error when running TLE on a network after two or more
users log in to the program then you may be attempting to run the TLE
executable from the server. Please see: I've heard that TLE is a network program. Can
I run TLE without installing it on a student's workstation?

7. Why do none or only some of the students appear when I use the
Class Results Viewer to check my students' progress?
Some of the possible solutions for problems viewing student files are:
- The student files must be in the same folder in order to appear together
in the CRV. The files should be at the same level in the folder, not
in sub-folders. Copy student files of the same grade to the same folder
and select any one of the files in that folder with the CRV.
- The student may be using his or her file. You cannot view a student's
file with the CRV while the file is in use. A student must quit TLE
before you can view the file.
- The student may not have started working in TLE. A newly created student
file will appear in the "Open" window after the "Student Files" button
is clicked but the student will not appear in the CRV's table unless
some part of a TLE lesson is completed.
- If you know the student files contain data but the names do not appear,
try changing your monitor's colour palette to 256 colours. Use Display
Settings in Control Panel to do this.
