SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS (minimum)

• Intel® compatible 486-33 MHz processor (66 MHz or higher recommended)
• RAM:16 MB (Windows 95/98), 32 MB (Windows NT 4.0)
• 15-20 MB free hard disk space
• VGA monitor and graphics card supporting 256 colours
• Double speed CD-ROM drive (quad speed recommended)
• Microsoft Windows 95.0

BASIC INSTALLATION AND RUNNING TLE

These instructions are for the installation of The Learning Equation on a computer that will run TLE as a standalone application. They apply to all grades and versions (x = Grade 7, 8, 9 or 10). TLE will look for the lessons on the computer's local CD-ROM drive.

1. Insert The Learning Equation CD Disk 1 into your computer's CD-ROM drive.
2. Double-click the SETUP.EXE file on the TLExDisc1 CD in the My Computer window, OR on the Windows Start menu, click Run and enter D:\SETUP.EXE. (If your CD-ROM drive is not D, substitute the correct letter).
3. Click Express or Custom setup. The Express setup is designed for running TLE as a standalone application. It will automatically install The Learning Equation to C:\Program Files\TLEx. Use this option if the CD-ROM drive that the The Learning Equation CD is in is the same drive that will be used when running the program.
   (Custom setup allows you to specify a different location for the program files and a directory for the location of the lesson folders)
4. To run the program after completing the installation, select The Learning Equation (grade x) icon in The Learning Equation group that is now in the Start menu under Programs. Make sure the TLE CD containing the lesson you want to use is in the CD-ROM drive.

NETWORK INSTALLATION

A network installation involves these steps:

1. Copying the LESSON and GLOSSDEF (glossary) folders onto a network file server disk.
2. Installing the application program (Nav32.exe) onto the student workstation computers by running SETUP.EXE.
3. The path to the stored lesson folders on the server can be entered when running SETUP.EXE or, later, added to the TLE.INI file, on each of the workstations.

Storage Requirements

• The complete set of lessons and the glossary requires approximately 1.5 gigabytes of hard disk space on the server. (Space varies for each grade).
• The main engine (Nav32.exe), files, and Explorers require approximately 15-20 megabytes of hard disk space on the workstations..

A. Copying the Lesson and Glossary Folders to a Network File Server Disk.

The Lesson folders are numbered and stored on the TLE CD-ROM's.
(The lesson and disk numbers below refer to Grade 9 West 2. Grade 7, 8, 10 and Ontario versions will differ.)

• Disk 1: Lesson folders 1-12
• Disk 2: Lesson folders 13-28
• Disk 3: Lesson folders 30-49
• Disk 4: Lesson folders 50-60

If you plan to use a CD-ROM tower or jukebox on the network server, skip this step and proceed to part 2. Installing the Application on the Student Workstations.

If there is not enough space on your server hard drive for all of the lesson folders, then you can copy only those that you wish to work with at this time. These folders can then be replaced as required when students have completed those lessons.

1. Create a new folder on a server hard disk for storing the lesson and glossary folders.
2. Configure this storage folder as shareable and read only.
   Depending on the network operating system, either the folder alone can be set to read only and shareable or the drive must be set to read only and shareable.
3. Insert The Learning Equation CD into the server's CD-ROM drive. Each CD in a grade set contains different lesson folders and the GLOSSDEF (glossary) folder.
4. Double-click My Computer and locate the CD-ROM drive.
5. Double click the CD-ROM drive icon to see the CD contents.
6. Select the GLOSSDEF and one or more LESSON folders.(You only need to copy the glossdef folder from one of the CDs in a grade set. Each CD contains a duplicate of this folder.)
7. Copy the folders to the new folder you created on the server where you have chosen to store them.
8. Repeat this procedure for each of The Learning Equation disks, placing all of the lesson folders required into the storage folder on the network server hard disk.

B. Installing the Application on the Student Workstations

Please note that it is recommended that the application (Nav32.exe) be installed on the workstation computers for OPTIMAL performance. If the workstations do not have CD-ROM drives then the SETUP.EXE can be run on each computer from the server by sharing the TLE Disk 1 CD and accessing this disk in Network Neighborhood.

1. Insert The Learning Equation CD Disk 1 into the workstation's CD-ROM drive.
2. Double-click the SETUP.EXE file on the TLExDisc1 CD in the My Computer window, OR on the Windows Start menu, click Run and enter D:\SETUP.EXE. (If your CD-ROM drive is not D, substitute the correct letter).
3. When given the choice between Express and Custom setups, Choose Custom.
4. When prompted for an installation directory "Where would you like this application installed", enter the path to where you want to install TLE on the workstation computer's hard disk.
   The default location for the application on the workstation's hard drive is: C:\Program Files\TLE(7, 8, 9, or 10)
5. When prompted "Where can The Learning Equation files be found?", enter the path to where you copied the lesson folders in the storage folder on the server. For example, if they are now found in: \\Server\Math\Lessons\, enter this in the dialog box.
   Be sure to place a \ after the drive and between each folder in the path and end with a \ (backslash).

C. Editing the TLE.INI file on the Student Workstations

This step is only required if the Express Setup option is used when SETUP.EXE is run or if the lesson folders are moved at a later time.

1. On a workstation computer, open the TLE.INI file in the TLEx folder (default location in Windows Explorer is C:\Program Files\TLEx\TLE.INI).
2. This file will read: [Lesson path],D:\ if TLE was installed from the D drive with the default or Express Setup option.
3. Place a comma after D:\ and type in the path to the directory or folder where the lesson files are stored on the server.
   For example: [Lesson Path],D:\,\\server\math9\lessons\
   When typing in the new path, be careful to keep the comma after [Lesson path], and to place a backslash after the drive name and after each folder in the new path. You must also end with a backslash.
4. If you have installed the lessons in multiple locations, separate each individual path with a comma e.g.. [Lesson Path],D:\,\\Server\Disk1\Lessons\,\\ServerDisk2\Lessons\
5. Repeat this procedure for each of the workstations.

ALTERNATIVE INSTALLATION OF TLE LESSONS

Use this method of installing the lesson folders to conserve disk space or when network traffic is causing performance slowdowns.

When running The Learning Equation, it is a good idea to stagger access to the lesson files. If the students work at their own pace then this usually happens automatically. If all the students are accessing the same lesson at the same time then the response time may be slow.

The following alternative installation procedure can alleviate this problem. In this alternative method, one or more lessons are stored on some of the student workstations while retaining the lessons on the file server.

1. Create a new folder to store TLE lessons on the hard disk of a student workstation (e.g. C:\Math9).
2. Insert one of The Learning Equation CDs into the CD-ROM drive of the workstation or use Network Neighborhood to access the folder containing TLE lessons on the server.
3. Copy the required lesson folders into the new folder on the workstation. You can copy as many or as few as your hard disk space permits.
4. Edit the TLE.INI file (default location in Windows Explorer is C:\Program Files\TLEx\TLE.INI) to reflect the new path to the lesson folders on the workstation's hard disk.
5. In the TLE.INI lesson path, put the local hard disk and lesson folder first, followed by the path to network locations of the lesson folders. For example: [Lesson path],C:\Math9\,\\Server\Disk1\Lessons\,\\Server\Disk2\Lessons\. The Learning Equation will search for the lesson on the local disk first, then search the network disks, in the order they appear in the TLE.INI lesson path.
   
6. Repeat this procedure for other workstations until the response time for the program is satisfactory.

TEACHER'S PREVIEW VERSION (TPV) OF TLE

The Teacher's Preview Version is a special version of TLE that is not meant for use by students. It allows teachers to progress through the lessons without answering the questions. Use the Next button or the arrow keys to proceed to a new screen. The standard version of TLE must be installed on the same computer before installing the Teacher's Preview Version.

Installing the Teacher's Preview Version

1. Insert the TLE Disk 1 CD. If Installing the Learning Equation window appears click the cancel then Exit Setup buttons.
2. Double-click the TPVx_32.EXE file on the TLExDisc1 CD in the My Computer window, OR on the Windows Start menu, click Run. and enter D:\TPVx_32.EXE file. (x = 7, 8, 9, or 10). (If your CD-ROM drive is not D, substitute the correct letter).
3. If The Learning Equation was not installed in the default location "C:\Program Files\TLEx", you will need to change the WinZip default path to where the TLEx folder is located.
4. Click the Unzip button in the WinZip Self-Extractor dialog box.
5. Click OK under the message "2 files were unzipped successfully.
6. Click the Close button in the WinZip Self-Extractor dialog box.

This installs the files gxtpv32.exe and gxtpv32.ini in your TLEx folder (default location "C:\Program Files\TLEx"). You may wish to create a shortcut to gxtpv32.exe and move it to more convenient location such as the Windows desktop.

Using the Teacher's Preview Version

To start the Teacher's Preview application, locate and double-click gxtpv32.exe. The Teacher Preview Version of TLE allows teachers to go through some parts of the lessons without answering the questions. Use the Next button or the arrow keys to proceed to a new screen. In Practice and Problems, Extra Practice, and Self Check the questions must still be answered.

TIP: If your TLE folder is on a network, and you do not have access control at the file level then make a separate copy of your TLE folder in a location the students cannot access. Make sure the files gxtpv32.exe and gxtpv32.ini are in the new folder and remove them from the original folder.

THE CLASS RESULTS VIEWER (CRV)

The Class Results Viewer (CRV) is a program that comes with each grade level of The Learning Equation and allows teachers to monitor their students' progress. It is used to view and print results that are recorded in the TLE student files.

Organizing the Student Files

The student files you wish to view must all be placed in the same folder. The location of the folder containing your student files is important. You can place this folder on your hard drive, on a diskette, or on a network drive. Since the Class Results Viewer can only display student results from one grade level at a time, keep student files from different grade levels in separate folders.

Installing the Class Results Viewer

1. Insert the TLE Disk 1 CD. If Installing the Learning Equation window appears click the cancel then Exit Setup buttons.
2. Double-click the TLEx_32.EXE file on the TLExDisc1 CD in the My Computer window, OR on the Windows Start menu, click Run.and enter D:\TLEx_32.EXE file. (x = 7, 8, 9, or 10). (If your CD-ROM drive is not D, substitute the correct letter).
3. If you do not want to install the CRV in the default location "C:\Program Files\TLEx\CRV", you will need to change the WinZip default path to where you want the CRV folder located.
4. Click the Unzip button in the WinZip Self-Extractor dialog box.
5. Click OK under the message "7 files were unzipped successfully.
6. Click the Close button in the WinZip Self-Extractor dialog box.

This installs the CRV files in the specified location (default location is "C:\Program Files\TLEx\CRV"). In some versions of TLE, the CRV application is called Results Viewer.exe and in others it is called Class Viewer.exe.

TIP: Create a shortcut to Results Viewer.exe or Class Viewer.exe and move it to a more convenient location such as the Windows desktop. Right-click on the shortcut and select Properties. Check that the Start in field in the shortcut properties is pointing to the location of the student files. If not, change the Start in path to show where the student files are located.

Using the Class Results Viewer

To start the Class Results Viewer application:

1. Double-click the Results Viewer.exe or Class Viewer.exe file in the CRV folder. (If Windows is configured to "Hide file extensions of known file types" the filename will appear without the exe extension.)
2. On the opening screen, click the Student File button.
3. Using the dialog box, go to the location of your student file folder.
4. Select a student file from within this folder and click OK.

The Class Results Viewer offers two views of the student results: a Student view and a Lesson view.

The Student view displays the names of the students whose files were in the selected folder. Clicking on a student's name gives:

• a list of lesson titles visited by the student
• the number of logical pages completed in each component of each lesson
• the number of quizzes completed for each lesson, and
• the first three scores achieved in each quiz (shown in percentages and in the order taken).

The Lesson view displays the name of the available lessons. Clicking on a lesson name gives:

• a list of students who have completed at least some work on that lesson
• the number of logical pages completed in each component of each lesson
• the number of quizzes completed for each lesson, and
• the first three scores achieved in each quiz (shown in percentages and in the order taken).

A quiz result displayed in green indicates that the student achieved mastery. A red result indicates that mastery was not achieved. A result of NC means that the student has not attempted this quiz.

Printing the Results

Clicking the Print button will print the results in chart form. The chart is printed on letter size (8.5" x 11") paper in portrait mode.

Note: a message reading "Script Error: Handler Not Defined #SetDocumentName" indicates there is no printer installed to the computer. If a blank page is printed, set your monitor to 256 colours on the Settings page of the Display item in Control Panel.

SETTING UP THE TEACHER'S COMPUTER

This procedure summarizes the installation of the three programs that come with The Learning Equation to be installed on a teacher's computer: The Learning Equation (student version), the Class Results Viewer, and the Teacher's Preview Version. For detailed instructions see the specific sections for these applications.

1. Run SETUP.EXE on the teacher's computer (see Basic Installation).
2. Run TLEx_32.exe from TLE Disk 1 to extract the Class Results Viewer. Change the location for the CRV folder if required. It installs in C:\Program Files\TLEx\CRV by default. The next three steps (3-5) are OPTIONAL but are helpful if the student files are NOT stored in the default location: C:\Program Files\TLEx\USERS.
3. Right-click the Results Viewer or Class Viewer application icon in the CRV folder and create a shortcut.
4. Move the shortcut to a convenient location.
5. Change the Start in field in the Shortcut Properties to show the location of the folder containing the student files, for example: \\server\math\grade9\classH. (The default location is C:\Program Files\TLEx\USERS).
6. Run TPVx_32.exe from Disk 1 to extract the Teacher's Preview Version of TLE. This creates the application gxtpv32.exe in the TLEx folder (default location: C:\Program Files\TLEx). If TLE was installed elsewhere, you must extract TPVx_32 to the same location.
7. Make a shortcut to gxtpv32.exe and move it to a convenient location. (OPTIONAL)
